Nestled in the heart of the South West, Devon and the neighbouring landscapes of Dartmoor and Exmoor have long been my sanctuary and inspiration. Here, amid the rugged tors, sweeping moors, and lush woodlands, I found the spark that led to creating Solace & Sky. In this post, I’d love to share some unique insights into this incredible area I call home and introduce a gentle reminder of how we can all tread lightly on these cherished wild spaces through the ethos of taking 'moor care.'
The Magic of Devon and Dartmoor
Devon’s natural beauty is legendary, but it’s more than just the views that make it special—it’s the deep-rooted heritage, local knowledge, and the way the community respects and cherishes the land. Dartmoor, for example, spans over 368 square miles of unspoiled wilderness, with its distinctive granite tors, ancient woodlands, and a vibrant history stretching back to the Neolithic period. Many of our retreats centre here, and it’s one of the places where I feel most at peace and in tune with nature.
One interesting aspect of Dartmoor is its status as one of the last places in England where you can enjoy the “right to roam.” This freedom allows you to explore beyond marked paths and really connect with the landscape. However, it’s a privilege that comes with responsibility, and that’s where 'moor care' comes in.

What is Moor Care?
Moor care is a Devon ethos rooted in sustainable exploration and respect for the natural world. It encourages us to preserve the health of the land, respect wildlife, and honour the timeless landscapes we’re so lucky to explore. At Solace & Sky, this ethos underpins our approach to everything we do. We believe in leaving no trace, preventing erosion, and respecting wildlife and livestock that call these lands home.
Whether you’re a seasoned hiker or new to the area, practicing moor care is a way to connect more deeply with these wild spaces. From avoiding single-use plastic to respecting nesting sites, it’s about honouring the moors and being mindful of our impact.
Rediscovering the Soul of the South West
There’s something transformative about being here. Walking along the moors, you may come across a Dartmoor pony grazing or stumble upon a quiet grove of trees that feels like it’s from another world. Our retreats are designed to help you reconnect—with nature, with others, and with yourself. But beyond that, I hope they inspire you to love and respect these places as much as I do.
Each retreat includes guided moments that allow you to soak in the landscape, whilst honouring our mindful approach to the moorland. From leaving no trace to supporting local artisans and makers who contribute to the region’s unique character, I’m passionate about ensuring our adventures support both the land and the communities that make this place so special.
An Invitation to Explore Responsibly
As we prepare to launch Solace & Sky, I invite you to join us in experiencing the wild heart of the South West. It’s a place that has grounded me and ignited my passion for personal renewal, and I’m excited to share it with you. Together, let’s explore, respect, and protect this stunning part of the world so that generations to come can enjoy it as much as we do.
